Document attestation is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — steps in the Saudi Arabia visa process. Getting it wrong causes delays, rejections, and added costs. This guide explains exactly what attestation involves and how to get it right the first time.

What Is Document Attestation?

Document attestation is the process of officially verifying that your documents are genuine and legally recognised for use in another country. For Saudi Arabia, this means your South African qualifications, certificates, and supporting documents must be verified and legalised before they are accepted by Saudi authorities.

Which Documents Need to Be Attested?

For a Saudi Arabia work visa, the following documents typically require attestation:

  • University degree certificates and academic transcripts
  • Professional registration certificates (e.g. SANC for nurses, ECSA for engineers)
  • Employment reference letters
  • Marriage certificates (for family visa applications)
  • Birth certificates (for dependent visa applications)
  • Police Clearance Certificate

Step 1 — Notarisation

The first step is having your documents notarised by a certified commissioner of oaths or notary public in South Africa. This confirms that copies of your documents are true copies of the originals.

Step 2 — Authentication by the Relevant Department

Depending on the document type, authentication is required from the relevant South African authority:

  • Academic certificates: Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) or the issuing university
  • Professional registrations: Relevant professional body (e.g. SANC, HPCSA, ECSA)
  • Personal documents: Department of Home Affairs

Step 3 — DIRCO Apostille or Legalisation

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) in Pretoria issues an apostille or legalisation stamp on your authenticated documents. Note: Saudi Arabia is not a signatory to the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents require full legalisation rather than a simple apostille stamp.

Step 4 — Saudi Embassy Legalisation

Once authenticated and apostilled by DIRCO, documents must be submitted to the Saudi Embassy in Pretoria for final legalisation. The embassy verifies and stamps the documents confirming they are accepted for use in Saudi Arabia.

Step 5 — MOFA Attestation (in Saudi Arabia)In some cases — particularly for employment and residency purposes — a final attestation by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is required once you arrive in Saudi Arabia. Your employer or their PRO typically handles this step.

How Long Does Attestation Take? The full attestation process from South Africa typically takes between 3 and 8 weeks depending on the documents involved and processing times at each stage. Starting early is strongly recommended.

Common Attestation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting uncertified copies instead of notarised originals
  • Skipping the DHET authentication step for degrees
  • Using an apostille stamp instead of full legalisation for Saudi Arabia
  • Submitting expired or outdated documents
  • Missing documents specific to your profession
