Moving from South Africa to work in Qatar or the UAE usually means two pieces of paperwork that cause the most delays: a police clearance certificate and attested qualifications. This guide explains the steps, and MD Gulf Recruitment can manage them for you. Requirements change, so we confirm the latest rules with your employer before you start.

Step 1: Get a South African Police Clearance Certificate

Police clearance certificates are issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS). MD Gulf Recruitment can handle your police clearance application for you, so you do not need to manage the process alone. Contact us on WhatsApp to get started.

  • Apply in good time. Delays at this stage hold up the whole visa process.
  • Keep the original certificate. Do not laminate it.
  • DIRCO will not legalise a police clearance certificate older than six months from its issue date, so plan your timeline carefully.

Step 2: Legalisation by DIRCO

Once you have your certificate, it must be legalised by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Legalisation Section in Pretoria. Depending on the destination country, DIRCO issues either an Apostille or an Authentication Certificate. Degrees, diplomas, transcripts and other official documents follow a similar DIRCO step before embassy attestation.

Step 3: Attestation for Qatar

  1. Confirm with your Qatar employer exactly which documents need attestation.
  2. Complete any verification required by your university or college and the DIRCO step in South Africa.
  3. Have the documents authenticated by the Qatari embassy or diplomatic mission responsible for South Africa.
  4. Final attestation by Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which offers online submission and an overseas attestation service. Degree certificates are normally submitted with the academic transcript.

Step 4: Attestation for the UAE

  1. South African documents must first be attested by DIRCO.
  2. The UAE Embassy in Pretoria then attests them. The embassy offers a digital attestation service through the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs website using UAE Pass, with courier collection and return.
  3. Laminated documents cannot be attested, and each document must be apostilled individually.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Laminating certificates.
  • Letting a police clearance certificate expire before legalisation.
  • Submitting a degree without its full transcript.
  • Starting attestation before confirming the employer's exact requirements.
